Antivirus
Sophos antivirus is one of the best anti-virus software tools around, it's used by government agencies and educational establishments worldwide and for some reason they have decided to make it free for apple mac users!
Unfortunately is not free to Windows users but if you are a student most colleges and universities offer free antivirus software to their student so Contact your IT services department to find out more.
Firewall
PC-Tools Free Firewall software does a great job at keeping out intruders and helping to keep your data secure, its free version is easy to use and doesn't hog your processor or memory.
Sandboxie
Downloading software from the internet is always a risky business especially with the high levels or malware and spyware around today but by using Sandboxie you can eliminate the threat of potentially dangerous software. Sandboxie runs your programs in an isolated space which prevents them from making permanent changes to other programs and data in your computer.
Okay so I just realised that this isn't entirely free but a free alternative for running potentially dangerous software is to run it in a virtual machine using VMware or a free alternative found here This should provide you with a reasonable amount of security and safety for testing untrusted applications.
